Club now open for Social Golf only

Dear members,

Thank you for bearing with us during this challenging time, over the past few days various government bodies have issued conflicting communications that have made it difficult to ascertain if our club can open for golf, and if so under what guidelines.

Taking all government directives into consideration, the committee has decided to open the club for ‘golf only’ as of tomorrow (Saturday the 28th of March).

Please note that the following rules and changes to our normal operation will be in effect during this time:

1. The clubhouse bar and pokies will be closed.
2. The restaurant will be open with pies, drinks and other snacks.
3. The 3rd and 4th round of the Dunlop Masters Club Championships will be rescheduled to a suitable future date.
4. All competitions such as; Pennants, Shootouts, Trade Days, Saturday comps, Monthly Medals, Chicken Runs and Pizza Runs have been postponed until further notice.
5.The Joker Draw and Chook Raffle have been postponed until further notice.
6. All golf will be Social Golf.
7. All tee times must be booked in advance, including all weekdays and Sundays. Please note that all existing bookings for tomorrow have been deleted, members must rebook tee times online.
8. Score your own card, no markers. Honesty system.
9. There will be no handicapping during this time, your most recent handicap will be used until handicapping resumes. Do not submit your card.
10. Members will not be allowed to congregate in the clubhouse, please arrive 15 minutes before your tee time, and leave the club straight after your round.
11. No alcohol will be for sale, BYO is also strictly not allowed.
12. Caddies will not be allowed during this time.
13. Privately owned carts are strongly advised to be used by only 1 person during a round.
14. Club owned carts are strictly to be used by only 1 person during a round.
15. Leave the flag in when putting, do not touch the pin.
16. Do not handshake with your playing partners at the end of the round.
17. Only members are allowed to play, no visitors during this time unless there is management approval.
18. Refrain from entering the club if you have travelled overseas to Covid-19 hotspot areas in the last 14 days.
19. If you are unwell, have a cough, sore throat or fever – do not enter the club.
20. Keep a safe distance of 1.5 meters between yourself and others at all times.

We feel that having the golf course open will permit healthy exercise in open air, as golf is one of the last remaining sports that can be enjoyed safely during the pandemic, however I remind members of their serious responsibility to observe health guidelines during this time. Please be mindful of government directives that are constantly being updated that may affect the club.

Regards,

2019 GOLF RULES

Rules changes 2019

As of 2019, new golf rules apply worldwide. It is the most major revision of the rules for more than 30 years. We have summarized the most important changes for you.

1. Search time (Rule 18)

Previously, five minutes were available for finding a lost ball. Now, the maximum search time is only three minutes.

Good to know: Most balls were previously found within three minutes and searching during the last two minutes was often unsuccessful – it is therefore not expected that this rule change will have a negative impact on scores.

2. Ball moved during a search (Rule 7)

Previously, the player usually incurred a penalty stroke if he moved his ball during a search.

Now, a mishap such as this is without penalty.

Good to know: You can therefore use your feet and your clubs when searching in thick grass without any consequences.

3. Identifying the ball (Rule 7)

Previously, if you wanted to pick up your ball to identify it, you had to inform a fellow-player in advance and give him the opportunity to observe the process.

Now, you no longer have to inform a fellow-player.

Good to know: If circumstances allow, it is still advisable to inform your fellow-players before you pick up your ball as a matter of courtesy and in order to avoid misunderstandings.

4. Provisional ball (Rule 18)

Previously, a provisional ball could only be played before the player walked down the fairway to look for his first ball (however, going forward as far as 50 yards (45 meters) was allowed).

Now, you can also play a provisional ball after you have already looked for your original ball for a while.

Good to know: Now that the search time has been reduced to three minutes, it will be virtually impossible to play a provisional ball after you have already searched for a while. Because, after the three minutes have expired, it is no longer a provisional ball but it automatically becomes the new ball in play.

5. Club-length (Definition)

Previously, the player could use any of his clubs to measure out a club-length.

Now, a club-length is defined as the longest club in your bag, except for the putter.

Good to know: Using extra-long, “broom handle” putters for measuring is thus no longer allowed.

6. Dropping (Rule 14)

Previously, the ball had to be dropped from shoulder height.

Now, you have to drop from knee height.

Good to know: If you drop from shoulder height out of habit don’t worry, just pick the ball up and drop it again correctly, without penalty.

7. Embedded ball (Rule 16)

Previously, the player only got relief if the ball had become embedded in a closely-mown area.

Now, you can take a free drop from all embedded balls in the “general area”, including in the semi-rough and rough.

Good to know: Balls embedded in a bunker or in penalty areas still have to be played as they lie.

8. Animal holes (Rule 16)

Previously, the player was only given relief from animal holes if they were made by burrowing animals and reptiles, or birds.

Now, the restriction to certain species of animals has been lifted and you can take a free drop from holes and tracks left by all animals (except for insects and worms).

Good to know: This usually involves molehills and mouse holes.

9. Wrong green (Rule 13)

If the ball lands on the wrong green, playing it from there is not allowed, as this would most likely damage the green. However, if the ball only lands near the wrong green the player was previously permitted to stand on the wrong green to play his ball.

Now, you also have to take a free drop if you would have to take your stance on the wrong green.

Good to know: The spot for dropping is therefore now usually a bit further away from the green.

10. Ball hits the player or equipment (Rule 11)

Previously, a penalty stroke was incurred if the player hit himself or his own equipment.

Now, this is without penalty provided it happened accidentally.

Good to know: You are therefore not allowed to use your equipment or your foot as a ball stopper.

11. Double hit (Rule 10)

Previously, a penalty stroke was incurred if the club got stuck when a stroke was played and, as a result, the ball was hit more than once.

Now, a mishap such as this is without penalty.

Good to know: A double hit therefore just counts as one stroke.

12. Touching the sand in the bunker (Rule 12)

Previously, touching the sand in the bunker before the stroke was not permitted, except for very few exceptions.

Now, touching the sand incidentally is basically allowed, i.e. you are permitted to lean on your club. However, you are still not allowed to test the condition of the sand before the stroke is played, improve the line of play, ground the club in front of or behind the ball or touch the sand during practice swings.

Good to know: You therefore now do not have to be extra careful in bunkers, especially if you are not very close to the ball.

13. Loose impediments (Rule 15)

Previously, touching leaves, twigs, stones, branches and other loose impediments in bunkers and water hazards was not allowed.

Now, you can remove them anywhere without penalty, including in bunkers and penalty areas (new name for water hazards).

Good to know: Please bear in mind that the ball is still not allowed to move when removing loose impediments.

14. Unplayable ball in the bunker (Rule 19)

Previously, the player had three dropping options – each incurring one penalty stroke – if he declared his ball in a bunker unplayable.

Now, a fourth option is available. You can also drop the ball directly behind the bunker. However, this option costs two penalty strokes instead of just one.

Good to know: You can use this to avoid playing a bunker shot at all but in most cases it will not be worth it.

15. Penalty areas (Definition)

Previously, water hazards could only be marked as such if they actually contained water.

Now, water hazards are called penalty areas and no longer have to contain water.

Good to know: This means that golf clubs are free to mark other parts of the course as penalty areas to enable sideways drops and thus speed up the game.

16. Dropping options with penalty areas (Rule 17)

Previously, with lateral water hazards, it was possible to drop on the opposite side of where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard.

Now, it is called a red penalty area and it is no longer possible to drop on the opposite side.

Good to know: This option was previously hardly ever used and it only led to confusion.

17. Touching the ground and water in penalty areas (Rule 17)

If you decide to play a ball from a water hazard as it lies, you were previously not allowed to touch the ground or the water before your stroke.

Now, you are allowed to ground the club in or out of the water when you play the ball out of a penalty area.

Good to know: Experience has shown that it usually doesn’t make sense to try and hit a ball out of the water if it is completely covered by water.

18. Ball moves on the green after being marked and put back (Rule 13)

Previously, the ball had to be played from the new spot if it moved either by itself or due to the wind after being marked and put back.

Now, you have to put the ball back.

Good to know: Most players already used to put the ball back out of reflex – even though this was incorrect. The new rule is thus in line with natural instinct.

19. Ball on the green moved accidentally by the player (Rule 13)

Previously, accidentally moving the ball on the green was only without penalty with certain exceptions.

Now, a mishap such as this is without penalty in all cases.

Good to know: If, for example, your club slips out of your hand or you make a practice swing too close to the ball and your ball moves as a result – just put the ball back without penalty.

20. Repairing damage on the green (Rule 13)

Previously, repairing the line of putt was not allowed, apart from a few exceptions such as pitch marks and old hole plugs.

Now, you are permitted to repair nearly all damage on the green, including spike marks.

Good to know: But this is not free licence to smooth out the entire line of putt, as natural imperfections are part of the game.

21. No positioning the club to help line up the shot (Rule 10)

Previously, laying the putter down on the green to line up your shot, for example, was permitted.

Now, you are no longer allowed to position your club to help you line up your stance.

Good to know: The same applies to other objects that could help you to line up.

22. No help from the caddie to line up the shot (Rule 10)

Previously, the player was allowed to get help from his caddie, for example to line up the putt.

Now, the caddie is no longer permitted to stand behind the player and help him to line up.

Good to know: This rule change mainly affects professionals and is of little interest to the average club golfer.

23. Hitting the flagstick (Rule 13)

Previously, the flag had to be tended or removed as the ball was not allowed to hit it when putted.

Now, hitting the flagstick is without penalty, which means you can always leave the flag in the hole.

Good to know: Statistically speaking, it is better to always leave the flag in the hole as the flagstick helps to hole out.

24. Ball wedged on the flagstick (Rule 13)

Previously, the flag had to be removed in this case to let the ball fall into the hole.

Now, the ball is classed as having been holed if part of the ball is below the lip.

Good to know: A ball wedged on the flagstick is therefore virtually always classed as holed.

25. Distance measuring devices (Rule 4)

Previously, they were only allowed if they were expressly permitted in a Local Rule.

Now, you are always allowed to use distance measuring devices unless this is prohibited by a Local Rule.

Good to know: In practice, this rule changes virtually nothing as almost all golf clubs already allowed distance measuring devices.

Message from the President

PRESIDENT’S BLOG – JUNE 2015

It has been just over a 6 weeks since the AGM, where did that go? We have a fantastic and energetic committee in place to drive the club over the coming years. I am confident the personalities and professional experience on the committee is the right balance to take this Royal Club up to the next level. I welcome Peter Del Monte as Vice President, Ken Dunn as Club Captain, Judi McKeown as Ladies Captain, Shane Johnsson as Club Secretary, and Dave Gray back as Treasurer. We have tremendous support in the general committee via Mike Purdy, Ravi Prakash, Joe KenKen Mok, Jamie Braizer, Garry Tunstall, and Wayne Honeysett.

Highlights in the past six weeks have seen the extremely successful staging of the 21st PNG Open. The corporate support and involvement of our members and visitors during that week of golf was awesome. What an atmosphere we created! It has set the benchmark for professional events in this country and if we don’t win the Best Tournament of the Year on the Sunshine PGA tour this year, we’ll be shocked. Congratulations to the organizing committee for their tireless efforts over the past 12 months to make this happen.

Last month, the committee staged the Gala Golf Day to raise funds for the expansion of our membership system and for course equipment. We had tremendous support from our members for the day, through which we raised over K100,000 for the club. These funds are not for general operations but will be invested immediately into improving member’s facilities. The Clubs thanks goes to Mike Purdy & Ravi Prakash for their passion in coordinating this event.

Next month the Club hosts athletes from 15 nations for the Pacific Games (July 12‐18). We have been preparing for this for the past year and the course staff through management and the course & greens committee will have on offer a world class golf stage for Team PNG to bring home the Gold on. I encourage members to make the time to come out and support PNG at the golf, it is free.

By now you will have seen the perimeter fence progressively being built. This would not have happened without the resolve of Mike Purdy & Stan Walker, to name a few. A warm hearted thank you to the government for the funding to make this possible, a worthy legacy from the Pacific Games for this milestone event in PNG’s golfing history. Whilst the fence won’t be completed before the games start, we expect it to be down to the back of the 12th. Post the Games, the fence construction will resume down the 15th. The Club has elected to invest the funds raised previously for the fence construction (via pre‐paid advertising) to continue the fence perimeter not covered under the government funding, from the 16th dam to the 18th boom gate. I’ll remind members that a fence will assist in reducing unauthorized individuals onto our property, however it is not impregnable, so please never carry valuables onto the course, rent a locker!

I aim to provide members with a bi‐monthly update on what is happening around your Club. I encourage all members to get involved and make this the best Club in Port Moresby. To ensure we keep effective communication between the Club and its management, the committee has deemed it prudent to appoint single points of contact between the Club management and the committee. This avoids mixed messages and priorities for the Club management to address (one throat to choke so to say). As such, the General Manager reports through the President, the Operations Managers reports through the Vice President, the Corporate Services Managers reports to the Treasurer, and the Course Manager reports to the Club Captain.

So as we head into the dry season, I trust you will notice some of the projects the committee and management will get underway for the benefit of all members, e.g. cart storage expansion, rock wall & bridges beautification project, new caddy shed, new half way haus and new cart staging area, to name but a few. Until the next blog, enjoy the club Championships this month and I hope to congratulate Team PNG in wining 4 out of 4 gold medals in the golf, Hit them straight, but not too often.

Yours in Golf

Mark Stallard

President, Royal Port Moresby Golf Club

2015 SP EXPORT PNG OPEN - Josh Cabban Wins it!

Cabban’s PNG TRIUMPH

Josh Cabban has won the largest tournament of his short four month professional career today, taking out the 2015 South Pacific Export Papua New Guinea Open.

Starting the final round in share of the lead with Kris Mueck, Cabban opened up a comfortable gap over the opening nine through making pars and he seemed to be the one to beat with nine holes to play, holding a three shot lead over Daniel Fox.

Cabban remained solid over the back nine and when he made an eight foot birdie putt at the 16th, he found himself holding a four shot lead with two holes remaining. Despite three putting for bogey on the 18th, Cabban carded a final round 71, to finish on 12 under par, four shots ahead of Fox who finished in outright second.

At 22 years of age, Cabban showed class beyond his years today to claim the $27,374 winner’s cheque, especially when trying to deal with all the pressure’s that come with trying to win a national championship.

“This isn’t a position that I have found myself in before, so I am quite speechless to have walked away with the win today.”

“I had a chat with a few of the other professionals this morning and one said to me, out of those in the final group I am no doubt the least expected to win today, so go out and play like it. I did and I guess the proof is in the victory”.

“I would have loved to have made par at the last and go bogey free for the weekend though after winning with a few up my sleeve, I am certainly not complaining.”

“When you look at the names of previous winners on the trophy I am very honoured to add my name to it. It is quite ironic that the winner receives a green jacket given I lost all of mine in the blue mountain fires a couple of years ago, this jacket will certainly be cherished forever”.

After only turning professional earlier this year, Cabban now moves clear at the top of both the National Rankings and the PGA Pro-Am Series Sunshine Swing Order of Merit. Prior to turning professional Cabban was a Carpenter working for his father though with the backing of his family always had an eye on turning professional.

“I love being a chippy though it was never something I really intended to do my entire life. After tasting victory today it is something I could definitely get used to and although it’s far more nerve racking, it is far more enjoyable than being on the tools”.

After two incredible weeks in Papua New Guinea, professionals will now make their way home for a few days before the Sunshine Swing is back in action next week with the PCR Polyweld Mining Town Series.

The Sunshine Swing forms part of the Choice Hotels PGA Pro-Am Series which comprises of 200 events Australia wide and the Asia Pacific region.

Played across more than 170 golf courses the Choice Hotels PGA Pro-Am Series plays an important part in the development of Australia’s Professional Golfers whilst also growing the game at a grass roots level by engaging an estimated 48,000 amateur golfers each year.

 Richardson claims PNG Open

Kalem Richardson has overcome a one shot deficit in today’s final round to claim the 2014 South Pacific Export Papua New Guinea Open.

Richardson claimed a one shot victory, after closing with an even par round of 72 to finish at four under, one shot ahead of Sam Brazel and Jared Pender. Pender came close to spoiling the party for Richardson, shooting a five under par 67, though a bogey five at the par four 17th would prove to be costly in the end.

The leaderboard changed throughout the day, though it would be an up and down for par from 60metres out on the par four 16th hole that would keep Richardson’s momentum going. A regulation par at the 17th and a two putt par at the last would see Richardson claim the largest tournament of his young professional career.

“This is no doubt the biggest win of my career, a win that I have been dreaming about for the past 12 months,” Richardson said.

“Patience was certainly the key this week around the Royal Port Moresby Golf Course, a course that can really penalise a poor shot. The timing of this win couldn’t have been better, as I will take the confidence I have gained from my win here into the remainder of the Asian Tour events throughout the year.”

With the South Pacific Export Papua New Guinea Open celebrating its 20th anniversary, Tournament Director Andy Stocks was delighted with the success of this year’s event. “The National Open is a significant event on the sporting calendar and we are once again delighted with the event we have delivered this year. The support that we generate from hosting is nothing short of astonishing, and I am sure all the sponsors and spectators will walk away from this year’s Championship proud of their investment of golf in Papua New Guinea.”

After two long weeks in Papua New Guinea, professionals will now enjoy a couple of days break. Professionals will then be back in their cars, as the Queensland Sunshine Tour heads north for the 2014 PCR Polyweld Mining Town Series.

The QLD Sunshine Tour forms part of the Choice Hotels PGA Pro-Am Series which comprises of 200 events Australia and the Pacific Islands.

Played across more than 170 golf courses, the Choice Hotels PGA Pro-Am Series plays an important part in the development of Australia’s Professional Golfers whilst also growing the game at a grass roots level by engaging an estimated 48,000 amateur golfers each year.

SP EXPORT PNG OPEN 2014 - Day 3 Results

*Kristopher Mueck will take a one shot lead into tomorrow’s final round of the 2014 South Pacific Export Papua New Guinea Open

* Mueck’s round of one over 73, included three birdies, though four bogies, including one at the 17th hole cost Mueck the chance to extend his lead even further

* A bunched leaderboard awaits the final round with nine players within five shots of the lead

* It may be a sleepless night for Mueck this evening as he is gunning for his first major Championship as a professional. “It is certainly shaping up as a showdown tomorrow with so many players in touch of the lead, but knowing how well I am playing, I am looking forward to the challenge. A couple of things didn’t go my way today and although this happens at times, hopefully the rub of the green will go my way tomorrow,” said Mueck

* The final round of the South Pacific Export Papua New Guinea Open gets underway at 6:30 tomorrow morning, with the leaders due to tee off at 12:00pm.

Zwart double on track

New Zealand professional Pieter Zwart will be gunning for back-to-back South Pacific Export Papua New Guinea Open Championship’s as the event heats up heading into the final two rounds.

Zwart, who was the overnight leader, managed an even par 72 in today’s second round, while Kristopher Mueck continued to move in the right direction, to take the outright lead by one shot at six under, after a two under par 70.

Mueck continues to play solid golf around the Royal Port Moresby Golf Course, though it will be Zwart over the weekend that will have the most to gain, as he attempts to be the first duel champion in the 20 year history of Papua New Guinea’s National Golf Championship.

“Although my putter has been a little cold, the key to my game over the first two rounds has been keeping the ball in play and recovering well,” said Zwart. “It would mean the world to me to win here again and be the first to win this Championship twice, though with the Royal Port Moresby Golf Course playing tougher than it ever has before, anything could happen over the weekend.”

For Mueck however, a win here over the weekend would be the breakout victory he has been patiently waiting for. “Although I have won a number of Pro Ams back home, a win here this week would certainly top any event that I have previously won,” Mueck said. “This is a high class event, with a high class field and although I am currently where I need to be, there is still plenty of golf to be played,” Mueck went on to say.

Many of the local galleries were hoping for the home grown talent to shine, but unfortunately it looks as though they will need to wait another year to see one of their own claim their National Open. August Peni is currently the leading PNG professional, while Nelson Gabriel is further shot behind.

Round 3 will get underway tomorrow morning, with the lead group teeing off at 12:30pm

• A disappointing bogey six on the par five 18th was not the way Brett Rankin was looking to finish his round, though his six under par 65, was good enough to take a one shot lead heading into tomorrow’s second round of the Coca Cola Morobe Open.
• Rankin’s round of 65, included eight birdies and two bogies. Rankin sits one shot ahead of 2010 Papua New Guinea Open Champion Matthew Ballard, with a further shot back to a group of three players, including two-time Morobe Open Champion Heath Reed.
• Rankin was elated with his opening round, especially considering the hot conditions that greeted professionals for today’s opening round.”It was a difficult day out there today, a day where patience was key to producing a low round. The Lae Golf Club has always been a course I enjoy playing and I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my week,” Rankin said.
• South Australian professional Tom Bond had two reasons to smile after today’s first round. Bond not only sits two shots back from the lead, but it was his finely struck six iron that found the bottom of the cup on par 3 17th hole, that gave him the most pleasure.
• The 2014 Coca Cola Morobe Open continues tomorrow morning, with Brett Rankin teeing off at 6:52am.
